What is a Hippo Drink?

Hippo drink is a popular mixed beverage that consists of vodka and rum and can be made with various ingredients. This cocktail is often served in a hurricane glass and can be infused with flavors such as mint, ginger, or orange. The name of this cocktail is inspired by hippopotamuses, which are large water-loving mammals that can weigh up to 2 tons and have long necks.

The drink’s history dates back to ancient times, when hippocras was a spiced wine that was thought to be beneficial for health. The drink was so prized that it was given as a present to the kings and noblemen of Europe during medieval and Elizabethan times. It was also regarded as a potent aphrodisiac. Traditionally, it was prepared with honey, sugar, cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, cloves, grains of paradise and long pepper.

In more modern times, hippo drinks can be enjoyed as a tropical tiki cocktail. The Trader Sam’s HippopotoMai-Tai is an example of this, a playful play on the Mai Tai invented at Trader Vic’s and now found in Disney parks.

To prepare a hippo drink, combine lime juice, dark rum, light rum, orange curacao, agave nectar, and orgeat syrup in a shaker with ice. Pour the mixture into a glass and garnish with a lemon slice and maraschino cherry. If you cannot find orange curacao, you can substitute it with triple sec. However, double sec is not the same as orange curacao in terms of color and flavor.
